Understanding the Avid Attic

attic.gif

The avid attic is a very important folder that holds history versions of your bins. The Attic folder will become your best friend to retrieve earlier versions of your sequences. If you wonder what happens on an auto or manual save your bins are saved to the attic. By default the maximum amount of files in the attic is 30 but you can change this from any number up to 500. To do this open your bin settings and choose the maximum amount to projects to your desired amount. To retrieve a bin from the attic folder follow these steps.

If you're looking to recover a previously saved sequence, you'll need to find the bin that contains your sequence.

1. Close all open bins and close the Avid application. Repeat, you must close all your bins before trying to recover an older bin from the attic.

2.  Find the Attic Folder on your C: drive or System Drive.

*The location of the Avid Attic depends on what version of Media Composer software you are running.  The best way to find it is to use your operating system's search feature.

Currently in Media Composer version 6.0 the attic is located in the following directory path:

PC: c:/users/public/public documents/avid media composer/avid attic

MAC: System Drive/Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/avid attic

3. Within the attic folder, open the folder based on the name of your Avid Projects.

4. Inside, you'll see a list of all your bins.  Identify the bin by the date or if you know which particular bin you wish to retrieve.  Make a copy of the bin to another location that's outside the attic folder (i.e, the desktop).

5. Rename the copy and give it the .avb extension.

6.Navigate to the file menu within Avid Media Composer and choose Open bin.

Return to your Avid application and your start editing your newly restored bin.
