Avid Editing and Effects Training

This course outline shows the Avid Editing (101) and Avid Effects (110). These courses are for Avid Xpress or Media Composer users. These courses are always offered back-to-back. Course times are always 9am - 5pm.
Who Should Take This Course:
This course provides sufficiently detailed instructions on how to operate the Avid software for the beginning to intermediate user. You might be an experienced or novice editor, graphic designer, or a developer of interactive media. You need not have prior experience with Avid editing systems. *Even the most experienced editor will learn tips and tricks not covered in the user's manual.

We can provide certified on-site training at your location (home or business). This provides us with an opportunity to customize the course exactly to your workflow. For this option, we don't charge per student. It's one flat fee. (no hidden costs). This course takes 3 days in an on-site environment.
Or, GeniusDV has a luxurious classroom in Orlando, FL. In Orlando, we limit enrollment to the first 5 students. This allows us to maintain a hands-on training environment with a small class size. This course takes 5 days in a classroom environment.
Prerequisites:
This course assumes that you are familiar with the Windows or Macintosh OS X computer system software, whichever one you use. A general knowlegde of the video production industry will help in terms of understanding industry terminology.
Avid System Overview
In this section of the Avid training class, you will learn how the Avid software thinks. This includes learning the Avid's project hierarchy and how clips and sequences link back to raw media files. You will learn why the Avid's proprietary OMFI media file system is a huge advantage over other non-linear editing systems. You will learn the basic Avid interface windows and how they function. We will teach you the differences between clips, mediafiles, bins, sequences, and projects. We will show you how all these elements function together and where they are located. Within the first day of class, you will learn the skills to be proficient in putting together a sequence.
Editing Dialog
Working with synced dialog is an extremely important editing skill. You will get the opportunity to edit a REAL syndicated national sitcom. We will show you the secrets to keeping your sequence(s) in sync. You will learn how to trim and create split edits that will help improve the flow of your edited project. We will show you how sync-locks work, and why they are important. You will learn how to recover from a sequence that is out of sync and how to repair it.
After you complete this section of the class, you will discover how locators work and how they can be used to your advantage. You will learn how segment mode works, and why it is different from three-point editing. We will cover some advanced trimming techniques including slipping and sliding segments.
The Avid software provides several ways to work with audio elements. You will learn how to adjust audio levels using the audio mix tool. You will also have time to experiment using the audio rubber band method of adjusting audio levels. Then you will have time to explore how the automation gain tool works. Learn how to add additional audio filters and effects to spice up your mix.
Creating Titles (Marquee Title Tool)
We will cover all of the functions available within the Avid Title tool, including how to create drop shadows, glows, and special effects using type. You'll also learn how to create specialized templates and style sheets that will help give your project a consistent look.
Course Bonus: 'Marquee Training'
Avid Marquee is an extremely powerfull built-in 3D title tool that now ships with the Avid software. Go way beyond the topics covered in the courseware. Learn how to rotoscope and create 3D models directly in Marquee!
Avid Effects Mode
Learn how to create custom transition effects that are easily accessible from the Avid interface. We'll teach you how to create complex motion paths by creating a basic template. Learn how to create dynamic effects such as the pleasantville effect.
