Spinning Ball of Death

Here's a quick little tutorial on how to deal with the spinning ball of death
The spinning ball of death as most of us call it, can really make your stomach drop. Establishing whether the ball has appeared for the Operating System or an  application is very important. One good way to make this establishment is to go into the System Preferences, and set the clock to display with seconds. By doing this, it will allow you to look up at the clock the next time the ball appears, and see if the seconds have stopped moving. If the seconds have stopped moving, you know that the operating system is locked up. For a long time I thought this meant doom for the application that was open when the ball appeared. As it turns out, if you go to the  ? menu, choose Force Quit, and select relaunch the Finder the OS will reset itself, and the application may begin functioning again. It does not work every time, but it is certainly worth attempting to relaunch the Finder before reaching for the power button. There are 100’s of tips and tricks like this at GeniusDV.com.
