Using the SmoothCam Filter in Final Cut Pro

Let's face it, the older we get, the shakier our hands and arms get. If you don't have the luxury of a handheld camera support or stablizer, no worries; just use SmoothCam.

SmoothCam is a filter that intelligently reduces unwanted camera movement from your shots. You can apply the SmoothCam filter directly in the Browser or to clips in the timeline. The SmoothCam filter, like all filters, in Final Cut Pro can be found in both the Effects menu and Effects tab of the Browser. Select the clip in the timeline, then choose Video Filters >Video> SmoothCam.

The clip has to be analyzed first for camera motion. The analysis in progress will show in a pop-up window as shown.

Depending on the duration of your media, the analysis could take some time. However, you can still continue editing. Just remember, SmoothCam analyzes the entire master clip; so if you're applying SmoothCam to a 10 second clip in the timeline, but it came from an hour long clip in the browser, it will take a really long time to analyze. The way around this is to export the the portion of the master clip and then import the clip into your project. So when you apply the SmoothCam filter, you will only be applying it to the footage you want. We do this by loading the master clip into the viewer, set your in and out points, then export a Quicktime movie with the current settings, and you will have a clip that can be analyzed much quicker. A great feature is the ability to submit clips for analysis directly in the browser.
