Paint Brush effect using Media Composer animatte
One of the interesting features within Avid Media Composer is the ability to use the animatte effect to create a paint brush wash effect.
This effect is done by using two video layers and then drawing with a large paint brush to reveal one layer underneath the other.
Here are the step by step instructions:
The first step is to edit two clips directly on top of each other. Drag the animatte effect from the Avid effect pallete to Video layer 2.
Enter into the Avid Effect's mode by clicking on the effect editor button which should be located in the upper left corner of the Avid timeline window.
Within the Media Composer effect editor, click on the Paint Brush tool. Adjust the size of the brush so it is very large. In this example, I'm using a brush size of 71.
Adjust the feathering of the brush to a value of around 20.
Within the Composer window, zoom out so you can see the edge of the visible screen area.
Now use the paint brush to draw across the entire frame. Sweep the paint brush across moving left to right until the entire screen is cover.
*When you let go of the mouse, the white paint will dissapear. Don't worry about that yet.
*Here's the tricky part. Make sure you select the object within the composer window using the selection arrow within the effect palette.
Next, select the first keyframe within the Composer window.
Navigate back to the Avid effect's editor window and adjust the path to Zero. The idea here is to leave the first keyframe at a path of Zero, and the last keyframe at a path of 100.
The last step is to render the effect. That's all there is to it!
