Converting Images to Fonts, Part 2: One-Time Setup

Installing the free software you need to create your fonts can be a little bit tricky.  Read on to find out how to set up the font software and the auto-tracing plugin on Mac or Windows.

Mac:

x11update2006113_20070608160556.jpg First, look for an application called "X11" that may already be on your Mac. You can use Spotlight or you can look in your Applications folder under Utilities. If you don't find it, you'll need to install it: you can either use the install disk that came with your Mac, or you can download it from Apple.

Now, go to the FontForge site and download the font software. If you want, you can find it from the main FontForge page - or you can just go straight to the download for the Intel Mac

Once you've installed the package, you have to go into X11 to open it: find X11 as before, and double-click to open. Now, select FontForge from the Applications menu.

Windows:

Um ... hehe ... I'll be honest, installing FontForge on Windows is much, much more trouble than it's worth. If you want to try, the FontForge folks themselves offer a tutorial, but until I have time to put Parallels on my workstation and find a suitable alternative software suite for Windows, I'm afraid the specifics of this tutorial series will apply mainly to Mac. Sorry.

From my long-dormant days as a type enthusiast, I remember that Font Creator worked really well, but it costs money these days. If you have any suggestions, please do let us know.
