*The Generators menu button: Used for creating bars/tone, colored backgrounds, and titles.

TEXT MENUS

In the lower right  corner of the viewer window is the generators menu.  Under the generators menu, there is a menu selection for text.

There are several text generating sub menus.  They all function very similar. A common text tool is the Text | Text  tool.

Text | Text menu

After navigating to the Text | Text menu under the generators menu icon, a piece of sample text will automatically be loaded into the viewer window.

10 seconds of ‘Sample Text’ will automatically be marked for you in the viewer window.  The default duration for text generation can by modified in the Final Cut Pro | Preferences menu.

When working with text elements in Final Cut Pro, it is recommended that you immediately edit the ‘Sample Text’ clip into the timeline.

The text can then be changed and edited directly from the timeline. This will allow you to monitor your changes. Otherwise, it will be difficult to view your changes in relation to the clip on the timeline.

KEYING TEXT OVER BACKGROUND VIDEO

If a title is placed above another clip on the timeline, it will automatically appear over top of a clip below it.

After editing ‘Text’ into the timeline, immediately place the position indicator on top of it.

LOADING TEXT BACK INTO THE VIEWER

It is important to double click on the text clip after it has been placed in the timeline.

After double clicking on the ‘Text ’ clip from the timeline, make sure the heading in the viewer window indicates that the clip is loaded from your sequence.

In this example, it goes from (Viewer: Text) to (Viewer: Text from Basic Edit).

If the clip is not loaded from the sequence, you will not be able to interactively view changes that you make to the title.

By looking in the upper portion of the viewer window, you can tell whether or not you are adjusting a clip from the timeline.

By parking the position indicator on top of the ‘Sample Text’ clip, you will see it in the canvas window.

The text will be keyed over any clip that is underneath it on the timeline.

THE CONTROLS TAB IN THE VIEWER WINDOW

In the viewer window, the controls tab will allow you to edit the parameters of your text.

ADJUSTING THE CONTROLS TAB PARAMETERS

By clicking on the controls tab, all the available parameters for the Text | Text tool will appear.

By adjusting the different controls, you will see the text adjust accordingly. This is because the ‘Sample Clip’ from the timeline was loaded into the viewer window before any adjustments were made.

EDITORS NOTE:

Since the controls tab has its own timeline, you can use (command  +/-) to zoom in or out of the timeline represented in the keyframe model.  This is practical when plotting keyframes for the duration of a clip.

INTERACTION BETWEEN THE CONTROLS TAB AND THE CANVAS WINDOW

This graphic shows the interaction between the control parameters, and the clip that you are parked on.

EDITORS NOTE:

Editors may make the mistake of not adjusting the clip in the timeline, and therefore they are unable to interactively see their changes.

ADDING A DROP SHADOW

To add a drop shadow to a title, you must use the motion tab in the viewer window.

Select the motion tab, and navigate to the drop shadow box, then click in the box to place an (x) to give your title a drop shadow.

USING TITLE 3D

When installing Final Cut Pro 3.0 for the first time, you will have the option to install the Boris Calligraphy software, which will install the title 3D, and title crawl options in the generators menu.

The Boris Calligraphy plug-in offers additional titling features that you may find useful within Final Cut Pro.

The title 3D and title crawl options are found in the lower right corner pull down menu in the viewer window.

Selecting title 3D or title crawl will launch the Boris Calligraphy titling plug in.

The Boris Calligraphy title plug-in is shown above.  Once you have designed your title, press the apply button and your title will appear in the viewer window. Then the title can be edited to the timeline.

SELECTING TITLING PARAMETERS IN BORIS CALLIGRAPHY

On left edge of the title 3D tool are five buttons used to adjust the properties of a title.

Up to five different edges and/or shadows can be created for every character in Boris Calligraphy.

EDITORS NOTE:

When adjusting title parameters for an edge or shadow, make sure the text is highlighted in the Boris Calligraphy window, and the edge/shadow box is both selected and checked.

Make sure that the correct edge/shadow box is selected.  Otherwise you may be adjusting the wrong one.

Because of the Calligraphy interface, it can be difficult to see which box is selected.

MODIFYING TYPE, EDGES, COLOR AND SHADOWS

To adjust the color of font type of any type character, you must select the text within the Calligraphy window.  Then you can choose any font or color for each individual character.

After a text element is highlighted, any parameter adjustments will affect the highlighted portion of the text.

EDITORS NOTE:

Another tricky element of Boris Calligraphy is that you must highlight your text or individual characters when adjusting its parameters.  You will not see the proper color of the selected characters until you exit the color selection box, and deselect the text.

This is not true when adjusting a color gradient.

BORIS CALLIGRAPHY CONTROLS

With a title loaded into the viewer window, clicking on the controls tab will give you a list of keyframeable parameters.

To edit the actual text, you must click in the text entry and style box.  This will re-launch the Boris Calligraphy text editor interface, where you can make changes.

All of the parameters in the controls tab are keyframeable.

The scaling parameter within the controls tab is vector based, which means the text will retain its resolution.

If you scale your text using the motion tab, it will become pixelated if you zoom in past 100%.

If you do not choose to add a drop shadow within the Boris Calligraphy text editor, you can still and add a shadow using the motion tab.

Shadows and transparencies added to text within the Calligraphy text editor cannot be keyframed out.  It becomes a fixed element of the text.

EDITORS NOTE:

You may find it easier plotting keyframes by dragging the controls tab into the timeline window.  This will give you more room when placing keyframes for the different controls.
