Creating Motion Templates in Final Cut Pro

motion_templates_menu.gifOne of the many new features in Final Cut Pro 6.0, is the ability to use Motion Templates. This means you can make changes to a template directly within Final Cut Pro, without having to launch Motion.

Final Cut Pro ships with a basic set of templates. You can access these templates from either Effects / Master Templates menu, or the Generators Menu (within the Viewer window).

The first step is to design an animation using Motion 3.0

After you have built your effect in Motion, you can choose to save it as a template.  To do this, navigate to the file menu and select Save as Template.

Also, you must click the New Theme button in order to save your template.  The existing themes are locked and you cannot add to them.

If Final Cut Pro is still running in the background, you'll need to relaunch Final Cut Pro in order for the new theme to appear.

That's it!  You'll now have access to your template directly within Final Cut Pro.

You can use the Generators menu to load your template directly into the Viewer window.

Here is the reccomended workflow for using templates:

  • Access the template from the Generators menu
  • Edit the template (motion clip) to the Final Cut Pro Timeline
  • Place position indicator directly above the clip within the timeline
  • Double click on the template within the Final Cut Pro Timeline (this loads it back into the Viewer window)
  • Click on the Controls tab within the Viewer window to make adjustments to template

Within the Controls tab, you can adjust the text, text size, and text tracking for this particular examples.  This will automatically update your clip within the Final Cut Pro timeline.

*You might also want to turn on the unlimited RT feature by navigating to the RT menu within the Final Cut Pro timeline.  This will enhance the amount of real-time performance when working with Motion templates.
