{"id":1616,"date":"2018-01-28T00:57:36","date_gmt":"2018-01-28T00:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/?p=1616"},"modified":"2019-06-10T11:31:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T11:31:05","slug":"no-media-can-be-written-to-any-mounted-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/no-media-can-be-written-to-any-mounted-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"No Media can be written to any mounted Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When running software products such as Avid Media Composer,&nbsp; if you receive an error that says No Media can be written to any mounted drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"966\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-27-at-12.41.18-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-27-at-12.41.18-PM.png 966w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-27-at-12.41.18-PM-300x70.png 300w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-27-at-12.41.18-PM-768x180.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-27-at-12.41.18-PM.png\"><br><\/a>In attempting to correct the problem, you may encounter a Mac OS X message that says&nbsp; &#8216;The Operation can&#8217;t be completed because you don&#8217;t have the necessary permission&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This error flag results from your software attempting to write files to the root level of your system drive.&nbsp; Apple purposely protects files on the system drive to avoid viruses and other vicious programs that may compromise the operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please Note:&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>It&#8217;s not normally recommended that you write media to the system drive.&nbsp; However, there are several scenarios where you may not have external storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#1-&nbsp; First Step :&nbsp; Right click (or control click) on your system drive and choose get info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on the orange lock in the bottom right corner of the Mac HD Info dialogue box. (see graphic below). Then type in your Mac OS X user password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Change_Permissions_to_Read_Write.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"397\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Change_Permissions_to_Read_Write.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Change_Permissions_to_Read_Write.png 397w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Change_Permissions_to_Read_Write-163x300.png 163w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Change the permissions for the internal system drive to Read &amp; Write for the wheel and everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*Side note:<\/strong> If your Mac OS system user does not have an assigned password, Mac OS X may prevent you from changing the permissions.&nbsp; If this is the case, go to your system preferences and assign yourself a password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you may encounter that dreaded message that says &#8216;The Operation can&#8217;t be completed because you don&#8217;t have the necessary permission. Super frustrating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/No_Necessary_Permission_Error.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/No_Necessary_Permission_Error-300x109.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/No_Necessary_Permission_Error-300x109.png 300w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/No_Necessary_Permission_Error.png 416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If this happens, here&#8217;s the fix:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#2- Second Step: Reboot the Mac, and immediately hold down Command + R. Wait for the the Mac OS to boot into recovery mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After it boots into recovery mode, navigate to the utilities menu and choose terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/restore_terminal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"76\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/restore_terminal-300x76.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/restore_terminal-300x76.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/restore_terminal-768x195.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/restore_terminal-1024x260.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>From the terminal prompt:&nbsp; Type: &#8216; <strong>csrutil disable<\/strong>&#8216;&nbsp; within the terminal window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then reboot the machine.&nbsp; Then you will be able to adjust the permissions for the &#8216;wheel&#8217; and &#8216;everyone&#8217; so certain third party software products can access the root level of the system drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note:&nbsp; <\/strong>I recommend re-enabling the System Integrity Protection to prevent accidental or vicious attacks against the Mac OS X operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that:&nbsp; Repeat the same process of booting into Recovery Mode (Command = R) and type &#8216;<strong>csrutil enable<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Terminal_Csrutil_Enable.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Terminal_Csrutil_Enable-1024x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Terminal_Csrutil_Enable-1024x217.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Terminal_Csrutil_Enable-300x64.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geniusdv.com\/tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Terminal_Csrutil_Enable-768x163.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When running software products such as Avid Media Composer,&nbsp; if you receive an error that says No Media can be written to any mounted drive.
