Outputting The Timeline To Tape in Final Cut Pro

While being a producer for a weekly television show, where 90% of the time things came together at the last minute, I found that the quickest way for me to lay down my completed timeline to tape, from within Avid Xpress Pro, was to press record on the VTR and press the spacebar to play my sequence. Well, you can essentially do the same within Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro will allow you to activate the external video ouput function and press record on your VTR or camcorder, then play your timeline to lay it to tape.

Recording From The Timeline

- After you have made the proper hardware connections, enable external video monitoring within FCP.

- Make sure to place the playhead where you want the recording to begin within the timeline.

- Press Record on you VTR or camera and give it time to rev up.

- Within Final Cut Pro, go to Mark > Play and select how you want the timeline to play back: Your choices would be to play to the out point, play from in to out, etc.

- Stop the recording device when your sequence has finished playing.
