Avid Xpress Pro- Media Composer: Deleting Files

What happens to your original file after you delete it from Avid. A student of mine asked me this today and he brings up a good point. What he is referring too is he had a QuickTime file that we imported into Avid and it from that import Avid created one OMF file and two AIFF files. The OMF is the video and the two AIFF files are the left and right audio files. We ended up not needing this particular file so we deleted it from our system, but he still needed the QuickTime file for another project. What happens when you tell Avid to delete the one master clip and the three media files?
The master clip is just Avid’s pointer to your imported media files, so by deleting just the master clip your media is still intact. If you include the media files in your deletion then the one OMF and the two AIFF will also be deleted from your system. So what happens to the original Quicktime? Nothing, it is still where you last left it. Avid does not look at the original Quicktime after import, Avid makes the OMF/AIFF files that are unique to Avid and now uses them instead of the Quicktime. This may seem confusing but just understand Avid will only delete the imported portion of your media.
