After Effects and RAM Preview

In the After Effects Timeline panel, RAM Preview plays either the span of time you specify as the work area or from the beginning of the Timeline. In the Layer and Footage panels, RAM Preview plays only untrimmed footage. Now that I am starting to work with HDV footage and starting to make much more complex compositions, I have notice that the RAM previews take forever. The best way to see if you are working in the right direction without the excruciating wait times is to turn down the preview quality. Going from full resolution to half or third really helps speed up your preview times/ They might not look the best but this will give you a good idea if your composition is coming together they way you are intending. Also another great tip is to turn off the audio during your previews. You may not be able to do this if you are trying to edit to the sound but if you can temporary do without it you can drastically speed up you preview times in After Effects.
