Final Cut Pro X makes it easy if you need to perform a slow motion effect to a clip.

Check out this short project. To demonstrate how slow motion works, let's create an effect where this biker slows down right before he hits the ramp.

Then we'll speed him back up when he lands.

Move to the tools pop-up menu within the toolbar and select the blade tool.

Notice that you can also press the B key to activate the blade tool.

In this example, navigate to the spot right before the kid launches his bike off the ramp.

Then click on the clip to add an edit point.

Notice how this breaks the clip into two pieces.

Then move over to the location where the kid lands on the other side of the ramp.

Click on the clip to add another edit point.

Now you have three clips sections.

It's the section in the middle that we want to slow down.

Navigate back to the tools pop-up menu and choose the select tool.

Notice that you could have also pressed the A key to activate the select tool instead of using the pop-up menu.

Right click on the middle section and choose 'retime' from the contextual menu.

A retime bar will appear directly above the clip area.

A green bar indicates the clip is playing at normal speed indicated by 100%.

Drag the edge of the retime bar to either speed up or slow down the clip area.

What's cool is Final Cut Pro will also retime the audio without changing the pitch.

Also, keep in mind, that when you speed up or slow down a clip, you'll be lengthening or shortening the length of your project.

Okay, that's it. Check it out!

Now you've got the basics of how to slow down or speed up a clip.

And don’t forget, GeniusDV also offers classroom or onsite Final Cut Pro X training.
