Learn the basics of using the insert edit function in Final Cut Pro X.

Okay, so now let’s talk about using the insert edit function.

When you press the insert button, Final Cut Pro X will splice your selected clip into the timeline.

So watch this example, I’m going to stop the playhead by pressing the spacebar right after the doctor says there were three men being extricated from a manhole.

Then I’ll go find a shot in the event browser that shows a worker being extricated.

Final Cut Pro will use the location of the playhead indicator to determine where the clip will be inserted.

So I’ll select a range for my clip to be inserted.

Now, by pressing this insert button, you can see how Final Cut Pro breaks the clip apart and it makes room for the new clip.

My point being here, is if you are going to use the insert function, make sure the playhead indicator is at the correct place within the timeline.

Okay, let me back up to make another point.

If you want to insert a clip perfectly between two other clips, use the down arrow on your keyboard to advance to the next edit point.

Or, use the up arrow to advance to the previous edit.

This way you’ll avoid having jump cuts with extra frames that you didn’t intend to splice.

Then I’ll go find a clip to insert from the event browser.

However, this time instead of pressing the insert button, I’ll use the keyboard shortcut.

Okay, the keyboard shortcut to perform an insert edit is the W key.

So this time, I’ll press the W key to perform the insert edit.

Okay, that’s it.

The new clip has been inserted.

Check it out.

You should now have the basics of how the insert function works.
