Some of the best color correction tools are plug-ins themselves.  This powerful little tool group comes from one of my favorites, Noise Industries, and can be used with Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects.  PHYX Color is a simple set of five color correction/grading filters:  Bleach Bypass, Glow Dark, Selective Saturation, Shift/Suppress and Techni2Strip.  Check out their demo video using this handy toolset:

I love the Selective Saturation feature in this plug-in that lets you precisely sample a single color and control its saturation.  The Techni2Strip is also a super easy way to help you achieve that "old Technicolor, Gone with the Wind" style.
disk_speed_test.pngRecently, we've had lots of students making free support calls to ask about external storage.  Just how much faster is my RAID-5 array than this spiffy 10,000 RPM standalone drive?  Is my network slowing down my office's shared video storage?  What about using solid-state disks for video editing?

Lots of software companies provide small utilities to help you measure your storage solution's speed, but many of them use tests simulating behaviors that aren't necessarily close to what video post-production looks like.  So the most reliable test utilities for video work will come from, well, the video hardware manufacturers.

Blackmagic makes an especially slick tool, and it's available from the App Store for free.  Simply click the start button and Disk Speed Test will read- and write- test your disk using large streams of data, and then show you the results in MB/sec plus a spiffy compatibility table.  The table tells you at a glance whether the volume you tested would be suitable for editing with a specific flavor of video, from PAL to 4K–and even calculates the framerate you could pull at each resolution.

light.pngYou've asked for it, now it's here.  GeniusDV is currently developing weekend training classes at our brand new facility!  Our first Weekend Video Production training class is now scheduled for September 17 & 18.  If you're looking to get into Video Production, this is the place to start.  The training covers everything from camera settings to lighting to audio techniques to setting up a shoot.  Get to know your own camera, or you can explore with one of ours.  Most of our students who've already been shooting with their own camera, will come out of this class saying, "I didn't even know my camera could do that!"  Learn in-camera editing, so your footage is ready to go straight to the web.  Let's face it, anybody can point & shoot, but it takes knowledge, information, and education to become a great storyteller.  So why not get started today...contact us at 866-566-1881 and get your Video Production training class scheduled.  Class size is kept small and fills up quickly, so reserve your seat now.

More and more of our students are exploring a move from Final Cut Studio to Adobe's Production Premium bundle of Creative Suite software–especially with Adobe's 50% discount for pros who switch.  If you're an FCP 7 editor, you'll feel right at home in Adobe Premiere, and you can be confident that the features you love most from Final Cut Pro are available, although they're probably hiding somewhere new.

For example, Final Cut Pro 7 places basic clip attributes in the Motion tab of the Viewer.  When you rotate, resize, crop or position a clip in the Canvas, you're really just taking a shortcut to set the clip's attributes that appear in the Viewer's Motion tab.  In Premiere, it's harder to manipulate clips' geometry directly in the "Canvas."
Changing your clip's Wireframe in the Canvas actually changes attributes in the Viewer's Motion Tab

fcpx_keyboard.pngHave you been looking for a keyboard for the new Final Cut X?  Well KB Covers now has them available, and companies like Logic Keyboard are in development.  If you are upgrading from a previous version of Final Cut Pro, many of the keyboard shortcuts have changed in Final Cut X. If you would prefer to customize the keyboard commands to be more similar to legacy Final Cut Pro, that can be accomplished within the software. Final Cut X has several advanced features that KB Covers help users take advantage of, such as the new Skimming and Audition functions; so now video editors can learn the software changes quickly.

The covers are made of durable, ultra-thin silicone and are perfectly molded to fit Apple Ultra thin wired keyboards, wireless keyboards, Macbooks, Macbook Pros, and Macbook Air, and also help protect your keyboard from dirt and spills.  They range in price from $29.99-$39.95.

Final Cut Pro X training at GeniusDV will include learning how to customize your keyboard, as well as the efficient use of the software in a real world workflow.

The folks at Google have just released a cool new demo video showing some of it's features in SketchUp Pro.  SketchUp is a 3D modeling program used by architects, interior designers, civil engineers, landscape artists, filmmakers, game developers, and many other related professions.  SketchUp also allows the placement of models in Google Earth, and Google's 3D Warehouse lets SketchUp users search for, download and add free 3D models.  Check out this video showing some of the features of SketchUp Pro.

GeniusDV has a great 2 Day Google SketchUp training class at our Orlando facility, or onsite options are also available.  Check out our SketchUp class schedule and give us a call today to reserve your seat!
It's been awhile since I've published a video tutorial. Here's a quick tutorial on how to use the DVE function within Avid's Marquee title tool.

If you find these tutorial's useful, but yet feel like you need 'hands-on' training.  Consider taking GeniusDV's 5 Day certified Media Composer class in Orlando, FL.
