Creating a running countdown or timer in Final Cut Pro is a breeze with a free plugin from Too Much Too Soon.

5….4…3….2…1… and we have liftoff.

Navigate to the generators menu, too much too soon category, then to clock.

This loads the clock into the Viewer window.

Edit the clip to your sequence.

Move over to the first frame in the clip in your sequence and double click on it.

Go back to the Viewer window and click on the Controls tab.

Select the time format you'd like to display, and the size of your clock.

Next, Click on the insert keyframe button for the milliseconds parameter.

Next, advance to the last frame of the clip.

A millisecond is 1/1000th of a second.  So if you want a clock that runs for 10 seconds, you'll need to enter in a value of 10000 milliseconds.

That's it! you are good to go.

Go ahead and back up and play your counter.
