Performing a Fit to Fill Edit in Final Cut Pro

A Fit to Fill edit in Final Cut Pro is also known as a four point edit. When you have an in and out point in the Timeline, and an in and out point in the viewer that have two different durations, you are in position to perform a Fit to Fill edit. The Fit to Fill edit does exactly what the name says, it fits to Fill. When the duration between the in and out points in the Viewer is shorter than the in and out points in the Timeline, Fit to Fill will calculate how much slower to play the clip, so that it fills the duration it is filling in the Timeline. Conversely when the duration between the in and out points in the Viewer is longer than the in and out points in the Timeline, Fit to Fill will calculate how much faster to play the clip, so that it fills the duration it is filling in the Timeline.

If a clip is brought into the Timeline, and then the discovery is made, that a portion of the clip can not be used, and a gap is created, you can set an in and out point where the clip needs to fill, and drag the portion still in the Timeline into the Canvas, and drop it on Fit to Fill, or use the Shift+F11 keyboard combo. This will change the speed of the clip to fit the desired duration.

Another way to do a Fit to Fill, is to use the Speed Tool. The Speed tool will allow you to change the duration of a clip without changing the amount of media used. After turning on the Speed Tool (SSS), you can act as if you are trimming the clip in the Timeline, and  in fact change the speed of the clip, which in turn changes the duration of the clip.

These are all useful ways to get a clip to the optimal condition for your situation. Check out our Final Cut Pro classes, sign up for a class today, and become a more efficient Final Cut editor.
