Using Flip Video in Final Cut Pro

Flip_video_final_cut_pro.png

Using the video shot on Flip video cameras in Final Cut Pro is a very simple workflow. Flip cameras offer flexibility rivaled only by lipstick camera. I recently purchased a Flip Video camera to be able to have an underwater shot in a production. For less than $200 I was able to purchase an HD Flip Video camera with an underwater housing, and a mini tripod. Personally I am very impressed with what the camera can do, as well as how convenient it is to have with me at all times.

The Flip Video camera records directly to H.264, which is not the best format to bring into Final Cut Pro. To be able to use video shot on a Flip Video camera in Final Cut Pro, you should transcode the H.264 to a format more Final Cut compatible. I suggest one of the Pro Res flavors. Once converted to you will have a much easier time in Final Cut.

To convert the Flip Video H.264 to Pro Res , take the files into Compressor, and apply a Pro Res Setting to them. Creating a Compressor Droplet will automate this process. Once the files are converted you can edit the video shot on your Flip Video camera effectively in Final Cut Pro.
