We typically will slate our Final Cut Pro projects when they are not the final deliverable. A great workflow is to create the template in Motion, save it as a template, and then it becomes available in Final Cut Pro.
The first step is to create the slate in Motion. Use individual text
layers for the different lines of information. You can add your logo to
the slate at this time. Once you have your slate the way you want it,
save it as a template, and be sure to check the box to collect the
media. This way if you did include a graphic/logo in the slate, it will
stay with the template in the templates folder.
Once
the template has been saved it will appear in Final Cut under the
Master Templates. To use the template you will need to select it from
the Master Templates (located in either the Video Generators or off of
the Sequence menu. Once open in the Viewer go into the controls tab,
and change the information fields to describe the project you are
creating it for. Last of all bring the slate into your timeline.

I have three slate templates. One basic slate that displays the information only, another that has color bars before the slate, and the third has color bars and a 10 second countdown. Technically I only need the last one, and I could just trim it as needed.
