Creating a Fog Writer effect with Apple Motion

You can use Apple Motion to create amazing text effects. Here's an example of how to create a fogwriting effect. If you are a previous owner of Final Cut Studio 2.0, you can also check out this LiveType Tutorial for the fogwriter effect.

You can use Apple Motion to create amazing animated text effects.

Check out this tutorial on how to make a title that writes on like a cloud of fog.

Start by clicking on the text tool.  Type a title within the canvas window.

A heads up display should appear for the text object so you can pick a font and text size.

Right click on the Fogwriter layer within the Layers tab to duplicate the layer.

Navigate to the library tab within the inspector window.

Click on the livefonts category. 

Look for the Fogwriter font.

Drag the Fogwriter font onto the fog layer.

Stretch out the fog object to it closely matches the text underneath it.

Set the timeline duration to 3:00

Navigate over to the inspector window, click on the text and format tabs.

Find the livefont timing parameter. 

Adjust the speed it's 200%

Adjust the sequence parameter to a value of around 5%.

Within the timeline window, drag the bottom text layer forward 18 frames.  This is where our bottom layer should start to fade up.

Navigate to the add behavior button and select fade characters left in.

Click on the behaviors tab with the inspector window.

Change the speed to constant.

Now, this is where it get's a bit tricky.  You'll need to experiment with these controls to get the fade up behavior to match the timing of the fog.

Play the timeline to check out your final animation.
