Audio 1 (Back to the Basics series)
I'm going to shift gears into discussing ways we can enhance the audio on our videos. In order to do this, we should take a whirlwind tour of how computers think about audio.
Think of the stereotypical "sound wave" above - simplified for our convenience. The line goes up and down
around a middle line - and this corresponds to the amount that the wave
is displacing the air at that point (or its amplitude). This is just another way of
saying that it represents the amount of energy (and thus what we
perceive as loudness) in the sound at a given point.
Things like pitch (high sounds versus low sounds) come from how frequently the displacement switches from one direction to the other; that's why we call it frequency. And when you have real-world sound, you have a whole lot of these waves adding and subtracting from each other, making the sound that much more complicated.
Next time - Sample rates (44.1kHz, 48kHz, etc.) and bit depth
